Disaster recovery plan is meant to save your organizational data from unpredictable scenarios where security is breached, IT infrastructure affected or a when a business is struck by natural calamity. In order to evade financial damageit is necessary to create disaster recovery strategy. Under proper planning, enterprise assess their vulnerable aspects and minimize risks. Here are few things listed below that should be on your disaster recovery plan checklist: 

1. Determine Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO):

RTO is basically the time required to recover all the applications and RPO is the age of files that are required to be recovered for normal operations. For setting these two objectives inputs from various departments are needed to assess the actual business requirements. Calculation of RTO and RPO will help in determining the best disaster survival solution. 

2. Make list of Hardware and Software:

Make a complete list of your hardware and software. Applications must be classified according to their utilization. By segregating them, one will be aware of their priorities during disaster recovery.  Once in a while data and applications cleanup is also necessary.  

3. Create a disaster recovery department :

Assign a department that will be responsible for executing the disaster recovery plan. The employees under this departmentwill keep a regular check on the infrastructure so that they could be prepared for any type of disaster.

4. Disaster Recovery Sites:

Disaster recovery site must be maintained to store all the essential business data, assets and applications. The chosen location must support your critical infrastructure that includes hardware and software. They must have a capability to automatically accomplish backups and replicate loads for prompt recovery. 

5. Discover Sensitive Documents and Data:

Apart from hardware and software, one must safeguard their essential business documents and data that can affect business operation in case of disaster.  

6. Layout Disaster Communication Plan:

Irrespective of organization size, a clear disaster communication strategy for connecting with all the entities associated with the organization during the calamity must be createdThe plan must include disaster status update for affected customers and media. At the time of disaster, PR team of the company, must issue a public statement on company’s website, social media handles regarding the disaster and recovery measures.  

7. Periodically run disaster drills to test the efficiency of the plan:

Mock drill must be run frequently to check the proficiency of the disaster recovery plan as you won’t want your plan to fail at the time of need. Test your plan in different situations and check the vulnerable areas like failed hardware and slow network connection.  

8. Document everything:

It is necessary to document every disaster recovery step, guidelines and strategy so that the organization can organically recover from disaster. A transparency must be maintained within the organization regarding the whole procedure and each individual must know his/her role in the recovery plan. Documentations offer knowledge and better understanding of the recovery process to the existing and future employees.
