Migrating Enterprise applications; Things to look for

Migrating Enterprise applications

To run a successful organization, one must be technologically updated. One of the most important step today is migrating your applications on cloud. It enhances business operations and productivity as it makes the resources available on a single click, which is more flexible, accessible and cost effective approach. Here are few things to look out for when you determine to migrate your applications to the cloud.

  1. Determine the benefits of migration:

First and foremost, determine the benefits which could be obtained upon migration. Does it enhance performance, does it offer security, does it optimize business operations, what’s there in it for you. Ask these questions yourself before taking the migration step.

2. Data security

Often security issues make or break your business. Securely transferring your business applications which involves yours and your client’s confidential information hold utmost importance. Choose the cloud platform that follows all the data security regulations and services.

3. Internal Changes

Cloud application migration would definitely impact the organizational workflow and processes. You need to provide cloud computing skills training to your employees. There will be a drastic shift in work culture, collaborations will be made with third party platforms and each individual using the enterprise application from ground level to the management level will be involved in the process.

4. Business performance

Assess the impact of application migration on business and IT operations in advance by evaluating the frequency and purpose of all the applications. Checkout the various aspects of your IT infrastructure that will be affected by the migration. Analyse whether the existing application in use are compatible with the new cloud platform or not.

5. Hardware

When moving your IT infrastructure to cloud, evaluating hardware status is necessary. If your hardware is more than three years old, then you can easily think upon cloud migration because the amount invested in the maintenance could be used for migration. But if the setup is new then it is advisable to wait a little while till your amount invested in the new hardware is recovered.

6. Appropriate cloud provider

If above points are satisfied and you have made a decision of cloud migration, then you need to decide which cloud migration approach is best suitable for you and which platform satisfies all your business needs. There are certain factors that needs to be considered during the selection of the platform and approach, which are listed as follows:

Technical expertise  Engineering team quality
Experience in the industry  Data security approach
Customer satisfaction  Existing customers and their reviews
Value in the market  New versions and solutions
Reputation   Customer Support availability
Availability of data centres

7. Costs and timelines

After choosing an appropriate cloud platform, determine the realistic cost and time consumption in the whole application migration process. The process cost must suit your pocket or else it may suck your resources. Moreover, keep a budget for unforeseen situations also, such as issues that might erupt during the migration process and may require an extra amount and time.

Aforementioned factors must be analysed before migration process in order to successfully transfer your applications so that your business operations run smoothly.
