Persistent VDI  

Virtual desktop infrastructures fall into two camps: persistent and nonpersistent. Persistent VDIs make users connect to a persisting instance under their login information. This means that files are saved, and any changes made while logged in are maintained. Each account in this style has a desktop.   

This is as opposed to nonpersistent VDIs in which users connect to generic system-defined desktops and save no changes to local files. Typically, this configuration is cheaper and simpler to operate; therefore, both persistent and nonpersistent VDIs find their own use cases.   

However, because persistent VDIs are more complex, a single platform that consistently runs virtual machines to user-spec is considerably more attractive than a VDI solution that only runs nonpersistent machines. Azure Virtual Desktop supports both persistent and nonpersistent configurations.
